Motif was commissioned as part of Shostakovich Undressed, an evening of events curated by SERG (Sound Emporium Research Group, University of Aberdeen), commissioned by the Scottish Ensemble to work alongside a performance of Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, Op110a, Rudolf Barshai’s re-orchestration of the String Quartet No. 8.

It is designed to be performed in between movements 4 and 5 and makes use of recorded excerpts from the other movements in the work, particularly those which use the DSCH (D - E flat - C, B) motif.
